How to buy cheap flights from Madrid to Tbilisi
- Book your tickets 1.5-2 months in advance.
- Fly midweek rather than at the weekend. Demand for travel is lower on working days, so fares are usually lower too.
- Book both legs at the same time. Airlines and agencies tend to offer better prices for a return ticket than for two one-way tickets bought separately.
- Use a search engine that brings together almost every airline and flight, so that finding and booking the ticket you want is as simple as possible.
Other airlines on the Madrid – Tbilisi route
Besides the carriers listed above, there are several more ways to get from Madrid to Tbilisi:
- Lufthansa — connecting in Munich.
- Air Serbia — connecting in Belgrade.
- AJet — connecting at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen or Ankara.
- Self-built routes on low-cost carriers (easyJet, Transavia, Sky Express) are often the cheapest option, but the tickets are separate bookings, so re-checking your luggage and the risk of a missed connection are entirely your own responsibility.
How long does the flight from Madrid to Tbilisi take?
The distance between Madrid and Tbilisi is roughly 4,000 kilometres and there is no non-stop service on this route. Pure flying time across both legs adds up to about six hours; with the layover included, the journey normally takes between 9 and 14 hours. The quickest itineraries usually run through Istanbul or Athens.
Keep the time difference in mind as well: Tbilisi is three hours ahead of Spain in winter and two hours ahead in summer, because Georgia does not change its clocks seasonally.
The Kutaisi alternative
If your dates are flexible and budget is the main criterion, it is worth looking at Kutaisi International Airport too. Wizz Air operates direct flights between Barcelona and Kutaisi, so getting from Madrid to Barcelona by domestic flight or train and then flying non-stop often works out cheaper than a classic connecting route. Bear in mind that the tickets are separate bookings and that you will still have around 230 kilometres to cover from Kutaisi to Tbilisi by bus or transfer.
Useful things to know before you fly
- Airports: you depart from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) and land at Tbilisi International Airport (TBS), about 17 kilometres from the city centre.
- Terminal: Madrid airport has several terminals and the airlines are spread between them, so always check your terminal on your booking and boarding pass.
- Connections: if both flights are on a single booking, your luggage is normally checked through to the final destination. With separately bought tickets you will have to collect and re-check your bags, and sometimes you will need a transit visa for the connecting country.
- Visas: citizens of Spain and other EU countries can enter Georgia visa-free and stay for up to one year. Georgian citizens with a biometric passport can travel to the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU is preparing to launch the ETIAS travel authorisation system, so check the rules in force before you travel.
- Baggage: the cheapest fares often include cabin baggage only. Adding a checked bag at the time of booking is almost always cheaper than paying for it at the airport.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct flight from Madrid to Tbilisi?
No, there is currently no non-stop service. Every option involves one, and occasionally two, connections — most often in Istanbul, Athens, Munich or Belgrade.
When are tickets cheapest?
The low season on this route is the winter months (January to March, apart from the New Year period), while summer and holiday weeks are the most expensive. Prices also drop when you book 1.5-2 months ahead and fly midweek.
How long should my layover be?
For flights on a single booking, 1.5-2 hours is enough. If you bought the tickets separately, leave at least 3-4 hours so that a delay on the first leg does not cost you the second flight.
What should I factor in when comparing prices?
Add the cost of baggage, seat selection and getting to the airport to the headline fare — a slightly more expensive ticket sometimes turns out to be the better deal overall.
