This article brings together 12 tips that genuinely work in 2026 for travellers flying out of Georgia — from Tbilisi and from Kutaisi alike. Along the way we debunk a few popular myths (incognito mode among them) and show which mistakes push the price of a trip up most often.

In short: for European destinations buy 1–3 months before departure, compare dates ±3 days, check the low-cost flights from Kutaisi, add baggage online together with the ticket and switch on a price alert — these five steps alone often save 30–50%.

Why the price of a plane ticket changes every day

Airlines sell seats using so-called dynamic pricing: the seats on a single flight are split into several fare classes, and the cheapest class sells out first. The more seats are sold and the closer the departure date, the higher the class the system moves to. On top of that come the season, the day of the week, competitors’ fares and demand for specific dates (public holidays, school breaks, festivals).

That is exactly why the same flight can cost 120 GEL today, 300 GEL a week later and more than 600 GEL the day before departure. The tips below use that very logic in your favour.

12 tips for buying your flight ticket as cheaply as possible

1. Start searching in good time — but not too early

The most widespread myth is that “the earlier, the cheaper”. In reality airlines rarely offer their best fare when sales open (10–11 months ahead). For Europe and Türkiye the most rewarding window is usually 1–3 months before departure; on the low-cost carriers (Wizz Air, Pegasus, AJet) it is 6–10 weeks. For long-haul routes (Asia, the Americas, Australia) buying 3–5 months ahead is safer. In the last two weeks before departure the price almost always goes up.

2. Compare dates ±3 days and use the whole-month calendar

Shifting your departure by a single day often halves the fare. Most search engines (including flights.avia.ge, Google Flights and Skyscanner) have a “flexible dates” option or a price calendar for the whole month — open that first and only then pick a specific day. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are on average the cheaper days; Friday, Sunday and Monday morning are the most expensive, because that is when business travellers and weekend holidaymakers fly.

3. Check both airports: Tbilisi and Kutaisi

In Georgia the cheapest tickets are often sold from Kutaisi International Airport, where Wizz Air has a base and flies to dozens of European cities. A Kutaisi–Vienna, Kutaisi–Milan or Kutaisi–Budapest ticket is often two to three times cheaper than flying to the same city from Tbilisi with a full-service airline. The bus from Tbilisi to Kutaisi airport takes 3–4 hours and costs very little compared with the difference in airfare — the details are in this guide. On the other hand, Tbilisi airport has more direct flights to the Middle East and Asia, as well as cheap Pegasus and AJet connections via Istanbul.

4. Remember how low-cost carriers work: the ticket is cheap, the extras are not

The basic fare of Wizz Air, Pegasus, AJet and similar airlines covers only one small bag. Everything else — a cabin trolley, checked baggage, seat selection, priority boarding — is sold separately. So always compare two tickets by their final price: a “70 GEL” ticket with 20 kg of baggage and a seat can end up more expensive than a 250 GEL ticket from a full-service airline that already includes baggage. Wizz Air’s baggage sizes and prices are covered in detail on our Wizz Air baggage rules page, and Pegasus’s in the Pegasus guide.

5. Buy baggage online, together with the ticket

This is the simplest tip, and the one that saves the most money: on low-cost carriers baggage is cheapest at the moment you buy the ticket, more expensive when added online later, and most expensive of all at the airport, where the price is several times the online rate. If you are not sure whether you need checked baggage, decide anyway before check-in. Excess kilos are expensive too — weigh your suitcase at home.

6. Use price alerts

If your trip is a few weeks or months away, instead of checking fares by hand every day switch on a price alert on Google Flights, Skyscanner or whichever search engine you use. The system emails you when the price drops and you buy on exactly the day the fare sits in a lower class. This works particularly well on European routes, where prices change several times a week.

7. “Incognito mode” does not lower the price — but clear your cache anyway

A popular belief says that websites “remember” you and raise the price with every new search, and that an incognito window prevents this. In reality the fare changes inside the airline’s system according to how many seats are left in the cheap class — not according to who is searching. A price that “goes up” on a repeat search usually means the cheap seats were bought by someone else, or that the search site showed you an old, cached fare. So incognito mode will not do any harm, but do not expect miracles either: the reliable price is the final one on the airline’s or the agency’s payment page.

8. Two one-way tickets are often cheaper than a return

On low-cost carriers a return ticket is simply the sum of two one-ways, so flying out with one airline and back with another often works out cheaper — for example out of Kutaisi with Wizz Air and back into Tbilisi with Pegasus or Air Arabia. With full-service airlines (Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways) the opposite is true: a return ticket is usually far cheaper than two separate one-ways. Check both options.

9. A connecting flight is sometimes twice as cheap as a direct one

A direct flight is comfortable, but on long-haul routes flying via Istanbul, Warsaw, Budapest or Doha is often significantly cheaper. If you have the time, a long layover can even be turned into a bonus — Qatar Airways offers transit passengers a city tour in Doha, and Turkish Airlines offers its passengers a free tour or hotel in Istanbul under certain conditions (check the details on the airlines’ own websites). Just make sure in advance whether you need a visa for the transit country.

10. Compare neighbouring airports at your destination too

Low-cost carriers often land at secondary airports: Bergamo for Milan, Treviso for Venice, Beauvais for Paris, Luton for London. The ticket is cheaper there, but the bus or train into the city costs 10–25 EUR and takes an hour to an hour and a half. Add that cost to the fare — sometimes the deal still wins, and sometimes an “expensive” ticket into the central airport turns out cheaper overall.

11. Keep an eye on sales and membership programmes

Wizz Air regularly announces 20% discounts (especially on Black Friday and when new routes are launched), Pegasus runs flash sales almost every week, and AJet has seasonal campaigns. Subscribing to an airline’s newsletter is free and tells you the moment a sale starts. If you fly from Kutaisi three or more times a year, do the maths on the Wizz Discount Club: the membership pays for itself, taking 10 EUR off tickets from 29.99 EUR and 5 EUR off checked baggage — for your own ticket and for one travel companion. Check the annual fee and conditions on wizzair.com.

12. Check everything before you pay — mistakes are expensive

On low-cost carriers changing a name or moving a date often costs more than the ticket itself, and basic fares are not refundable at all. So before paying, check: the first name and surname exactly as they appear in the passport; the date and the airport (Tbilisi or Kutaisi); the baggage package; visa and insurance questions. Be careful, too, with pre-ticked extras — insurance, seat selection, SMS notifications — that many sites quietly add to the basket.

Where and how to buy: an aggregator or the airline’s own site

The optimal approach has two steps. First compare every airline and connection in one window on flights.avia.ge or another aggregator — that is how you see which combination is genuinely cheap. Then, if the price is the same, you can buy either on the aggregator or directly on the airline’s website. The aggregator’s advantage is a single place with offers from different airlines and payment in your own currency; the airline’s site makes changes to the booking easier if something goes wrong. In either case, treat the ticket as bought only once the confirmation (the PNR or booking code) arrives in your inbox.

Search for flights on flights.avia.ge

Seasonality: when flying from Georgia is cheapest

Period

Price

Why

Second half of January – March

Lowest

The holidays are over and demand is at its minimum; warm destinations (Egypt, the UAE) are relatively cheap too

April – May

Low / medium

Good weather in Europe, prices not yet at summer levels; Easter week is the exception

June – August

High

School holidays, the resort season and visiting relatives push fares to and from Georgia up

September – October

Medium / low

The “velvet season” — still warm in Europe, prices falling

November (Black Friday)

Low + sales

The peak of airline discounts, and flying itself is cheap

20 December – 10 January

Highest

Christmas and New Year travel; buy 2–3 months in advance

Warm winter destinations, compared by price and flight time, are covered in our article on where to fly in winter from Tbilisi and Kutaisi.

5 mistakes that make a ticket more expensive

Buying in the last week. On low-cost carriers this is almost always a fare two to three times higher.

Adding baggage at the airport. The most expensive option there is; adding it online before check-in is far cheaper.

Checking only Tbilisi airport. Kutaisi is often cheaper for Europe, and Batumi for some Turkish and Russian destinations.

Filtering for direct flights only. On long-haul routes a connecting option is frequently much cheaper.

A mistake in a name or a date. Correcting it on a low-cost carrier costs almost as much as a new ticket — check everything twice before you pay.

Payment and currency: where the “invisible” 3–5% disappears

Often the ticket itself is chosen well and the final amount is still higher than expected — the difference appears at the payment stage. Three places where this happens most often:

Dynamic currency conversion. When a site shows a price in euros but offers to charge you in your home currency, it does the conversion itself, and the rate is usually worse than your bank’s. Choose the ticket’s original currency and leave the conversion to your bank.

Payment-method fees. Some aggregators and airlines add a percentage depending on the card or e-wallet you use. That amount only appears on the final payment page — so compare airlines by the figure shown on the confirmation button.

Pre-ticked extras. Insurance, seat selection, SMS notifications or a “flexible date” package are sometimes switched on automatically. Go through every line of the booking summary separately.

Two practical details are worth remembering as well: when paying in a foreign currency, leave slightly more than the exact amount on the card, because the rate is fixed at the moment of authorisation; and make sure online payment confirmation (3-D Secure) is active on your card beforehand — without it, payments on foreign sites often fail, and the cheap seat may go to someone else in the meantime.

Children, infants and several passengers on one booking

On most airlines an infant under two flies on an adult’s lap, without a seat of their own, and the ticket is much cheaper: on low-cost carriers it is a fixed fee, while full-service airlines often charge a percentage of the adult fare. From the age of two a child needs a full seat — full-service airlines still offer child discounts, low-cost carriers essentially do not. Check the exact fee, the age limit and the rules for pushchairs and bassinets on the specific airline’s page before buying, as conditions differ considerably.

The second, less well-known detail concerns searching for several passengers. If only one seat is left in the cheap fare class, a search for two passengers will show both of them in the more expensive fare — that is how booking systems work. So for two or three passengers, always compare the result of searching separately as well. Just bear in mind that separate bookings do not guarantee seats together, and baggage has to be added to each booking individually.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed: what you are entitled to

A cheap ticket protects you too — but it depends on where you are flying from and with which airline. EU Regulation 261/2004 applies in two cases: when the departure airport is in the European Union or the European Economic Area, whichever airline operates the flight; and when a flight into the EU is operated by an EU-licensed carrier. In practice this means that Kutaisi–Milan with Wizz Air is covered (an EU airline flying into the EU), as is any flight from Europe back to Georgia, because the departure is from an EU airport. Tbilisi–Istanbul with a Turkish carrier, on the other hand, is not covered by this regulation.

Where the regulation does apply, a cancellation (if the airline gave you less than 14 days’ notice) or an arrival more than three hours late entitles the passenger to fixed compensation based on distance:

Flight distance

Compensation

Up to 1,500 km

250 EUR

1,500–3,500 km (and intra-EU flights over 1,500 km)

400 EUR

Over 3,500 km

600 EUR

Besides compensation, the airline must provide meals and refreshments during the wait, a hotel and transfer where necessary, and a full refund if the delay exceeds five hours. Compensation is not due when the cause is an “extraordinary circumstance”: severe weather, a security issue, air traffic restrictions or a strike outside the airline. Submit the claim directly to the airline and keep your boarding pass, booking confirmation and the airline’s notification about the delay.

One last point, and the most important one for cheap tickets: if you have assembled the route from two separate bookings (say Kutaisi–Warsaw with one airline and Warsaw–London with another), the second airline is not responsible for the first flight’s delay and you will be buying a new ticket yourself. In such a combination, a connection buffer of less than four hours is a risk — the saving will not cover a single missed flight.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I buy a plane ticket to get it cheap?

For Europe and Türkiye, 1–3 months before departure; on low-cost carriers 6–10 weeks is the optimal window. For long-haul flights, 3–5 months. For the New Year and summer peaks, as early as possible, because the cheap fare classes sell out fast.

Do plane tickets really get cheaper at the last minute?

Very rarely. Airlines raise fares as departure approaches, because at the last moment tickets are mostly bought by people who have no choice. “Last-minute” discounts mainly apply to charter package holidays, not to scheduled tickets.

Which day is cheapest to fly?

Statistically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. The most expensive are Friday evening, Sunday and Monday morning. For a specific route, though, always check the whole-month price calendar — exceptions are common.

Does incognito mode help you find a cheaper ticket?

No. The price of a ticket depends on how many cheap seats are left on the flight, not on who is searching or how often. Incognito mode only helps you avoid your browser’s cached, out-of-date prices.

Is a return ticket cheaper, or two one-ways?

On low-cost carriers (Wizz Air, Pegasus, AJet) there is usually no difference — a return is the sum of two one-ways, so combining different airlines and airports often works out cheaper. On full-service airlines a return ticket is mostly far cheaper than two one-ways.

Where should I buy — on an aggregator or on the airline’s site?

Compare all the options on an aggregator first, because it shows you combinations of different airlines and connections in a single window. You can then buy either there or on the airline’s website — the price is usually the same, and the difference lies in the procedures for changing a ticket.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"FAQPage","mainEntity":[
{"@type":"Question","name":"How far in advance should I buy a plane ticket to get it cheap?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"For Europe and Türkiye, 1-3 months before departure; on low-cost carriers 6-10 weeks is the optimal window.
